The phonetic alphabet

Amuse-bouche:

A centurion walks into a bar, holds up 2 fingers, and the bartender brings him 5 beers.

Today’s Wonderful Word: “ferdutzt.”

The symbols of the phonetic alphabet are quite difficult to copy into text, so I will simply include a picture from Practical English Usage by Michael Swan.

That’s all for today.

In case you’re ferdutzt, here’s the explanation to today’s amuse bouche:

The centurion held up two fingers in the shape of a “V.” The Roman numeral for 5 is “V.”

Answer to Saturday’s riddle:

The man, his wife, and a second man (the captain) were on a ship. They encountered a storm that left them shipwrecked on a desert island. The man’s wife died in the wreck, and he did not find her body. When the captain and the man ran out of food, the captain prepared what he said was albatross. Later the man and the captain were rescued. At some point later in life, the man decided to order albatross at a restaurant. It tasted nothing like what he was told was albatross on the island, which makes him realize that the captain had cooked and served his wife’s dead body. Unable to cope with the realization, he killed himself.
