The dummy of Zeery

Amuse-bouche:

Only Handle It Once (OHIO). Ohio is also the close pronunciation of “good morning” in Japanese. Make it a good morning by only handling it once. A job done well is a job well done.

Today’s Wonderful Word: “selcouth.”

Definition: strange, uncommon.

Etymology: From Old English seldcūth, which is equivalent to seldan, meaning “seldom,” and cūth, meaning “known or acquainted with.” Selcouth, as a word of Old English origin, was first recorded in English before 900 CE.

The dummy of Zeery

The dummy of Zeery was oh so weary,

He sat on a bench by the pond.

The wizard of Zeery was oh so cheery,

He gave him a magical wand.

The dummy of Zeery was mighty greedy,

He casted a powerful curse.

“Fall asleep, be wealthy, no longer needy,

Fill gold to the brim of my purse.”

The dummy of Zeery was quickly dreamy.

His pillow, it started to shine.

The wizard of Zeery, eager and gleamy,

Had just about started to whine.

The dummy of Zeery was soundly sleepy,

And rising up into the air.

His wealth became great, his eyes became weepy,

As gold piled up ‘neath his hair.

The dummy of Zeery was scared and snappy,

When off the mountain he tumbled.

The wizard of Zeery was not so happy,

He mumbled and cursed and grumbled.

The dummy of Zeery, so dull and nutty,

Let fly his last desperation.

“Please, wizard of Zeery, my mind is muddy,

Grant me one more incantation.”

The dummy of Zeery was far from funny.

His wish was denied straight away.

The wizard of Zeery, now in the dunny,

Realized in the pond he would stay.

The dummy of Zeery was oh so weary,

Sinking way down to the bottom.

The wizard of Zeery was not so cheery,

And thought, “I ought to have caught him.”

Answer to Saturday’s riddle:

There are multiple possible solutions. Here is one:

I placed the first queen on the top row in the square to the right of the middle. For the next queen, I went down 3 spaces and left 1. From the placement of the 2nd queen, I went right 2 squares to the nearest open column, then down 3 to place the 3rd queen. From there, I went left 3 squares to the nearest open column, then down 3, starting back at the top of the board. After that, I went right 4 squares to the nearest open column, then down 3 and repeated this pattern for all remaining queens.
