Mighty Maito Gai (Part 1)

Spoiler alert!

I am about to reveal information from Naruto: Shippuden. If you have not seen Naruto: Shippuden (or if you have not heard of it before), please do not read below this paragraph (and please watch Naruto and Naruto: Shippuden). If you skip this post and would still like to see today’s brain teaser, send me an email at samediqqch@gmail.com.

To take up more space for those readers who wish to prevent any unwanted spoilers from occurring, I will take this paragraph to describe what a spoiler is. A spoiler is something (or someone) that reveals previously unknown information about the plot of a book, movie, television show, anime, or any other form containing a story.

The word “spoiler” as it pertains to Naruto is not to be confused with the automotive aerodynamic device found on most cars and trucks.

Today’s quote: Maito Gai to Kakashi Hatake: “What is with your attitude?! We’ll never be young like this again!”

Who is Maito Gai?

Maito Gai, or Might Guy in the English dub, is a jonin of the Leaf Village, a skilled taijutsu user who has mastered the Opening of the Gates, and an overall splendid ninja.

Alternative monikers are “Guy Sensei,” which his eager student, Rock Lee, respectfully calls him, and “The Handsome Devil of the Leaf,” a title which Guy reserves for himself. Might Guy is also known as “Bushier Brows Sensei,” as Naruto calls him, and “The Noble Green Beast.”

From left to right: Guy Sensei and Kakashi Sensei

Guy’s lifetime rival is Kakashi Sensei, with whom he regularly battles and to whom he issues daily challenges. As best friends, Guy and Kakashi often test their skills against one another to increase their strength and grow side by side.

Guy Sensei has dedicated his life to protecting those who are precious to him. He seizes every opportunity to nurture Rock Lee’s skills so that he, too, can become a splendid shinobi (AKA ninja). Guy is willing to go to the extreme to save those he cares about. If he must put his life on the line so that others will survive, he will do just that.

What are the Eight Gates?

The Eight Gates exist in order to limit the flow of chakra within an individual’s body. Ordinarily, individuals can use no more than 20% of their body’s full potential, the brain’s way of protecting the individual from harming their body through overexertion. With training, individuals can learn to remove these limiters, referred to as “opening” the gates. With each opened gate, individuals are given access to more and more of their body’s chakra, thus increasing their physical strength and speed.

  1. The Gate of Opening (開門), located in the brain’s left hemisphere, removes the user’s mental inhibitions. Opening this gate allows the user to perform the Front Lotus.
  2. The Gate of Healing / Rest (休門), located in the brain’s right hemisphere, increases the user’s physical strength, and enables the body to rapidly recover from exhaustion.
  3. The Gate of Life (生門), located on the spinal cord, causes the user’s pupils to disappear, their hair to stand on end, and their veins to bulge all over their body. Opening this gate allows the user to perform the Reverse Lotus. The chakra released is enough to create a buffer zone to allow safe passage through severe adverse weather.
  4. The Gate of Pain (傷門) is also located on the spinal cord. Opening this gate may cause nosebleeds and torn muscles.
  5. The Gate of Limit / Closing (杜門) is located in the abdomen. Rock Lee opens this gate as he’s about to deliver the final blow of the Reverse Lotus, seemingly to increase his strength; after completing the Reverse Lotus, Lee’s limbs receive compound fractures.
  6. The Gate of View / Joy (景門), is located in the stomach. Opening this gate allows the user to perform the Morning Peacock, wherein the user’s punches are so fast that friction with the air produces flames. Opening this gate has sometimes been shown to create a green aura around the user. The power that emanates from the user is enough to displace surrounding bodies of water.
  7. The Gate of Wonder / Shock (驚門), located below the stomach, causes the user’s body to secrete a blue sweat. The sweat immediately evaporates, creating an aura around the user that can be mistaken for chakra. Opening this gate allows the user to perform the Daytime Tiger, a single punch that creates a pocket of compressed air. After opening this gate, Guy’s muscle fibers rupture, causing him intense pain if anyone touches him.
  8. The Gate of Death (死門) is located in the heart. Users open this gate by puncturing their chest with their thumb to direct the chakra there. While open, the user’s heart pumps at maximum speed, granting them power a hundred times greater than they are usually capable of. A “Steam of Blood” is emitted from the user’s pores and hair, resembling a flaming red aura. Opening this gate allows the user to perform the Evening Elephant and Night Guy. The eighth gate causes the body to continually heat up until it’s been cooked from the inside-out, reducing the user to ash.
