20 Texting Acronyms and Abbreviations

  1. LOL = laughing out loud / laugh out loud (Not to be confused with “lots of love”)
    • Used to express that you think something is funny
    • Similar to “haha”
    • Other acceptable forms: lol, lolz
    • For example, “Haha, that meme is hilarious lol.”
  2. BRB = be right back
    • Used when you are leaving for a short time and plan to return soon
    • For example, “I’m gonna run to the store real quick. BRB.”
  3. LMK = let me know
    • Used to request a response
    • For example, “LMK if you’re able to hang out this weekend.”
  4. ASAP = as soon as possible
    • Used to emphasize the immediacy of your request
    • For example, “Can you hang out this weekend? LMK ASAP.”
  5. bcs / bc = because
  6. thx = thanks
  7. RSVP = Répondez s’il vous plaît (Please respond)
    • Used with invitations to ask whether the recipient will attend
    • Can be used as a verb or a noun
    • For example, “We only received 12 of 20 RSVPs for Saturday’s party. Please ask the other 8 people to RSVP by tomorrow.”
  8. TTYL = talk to you later
    • Used as an informal way to tell someone goodbye
    • Variation: TTFN = ta-ta for now
    • For example, “It was great chatting! TTYL.”
  9. BTW = by the way
    • Used to interject a side note or to change the subject
    • Spoken variation pronounced bee-tee-dubs
    • For example, “Oh BTW I forgot to tell you I’ll be moving soon.”
  10. IMO = in my opinion 
    • Used to state your thoughts and / or beliefs
    • For example, “In-N-Out has better milkshakes than Whataburger IMO.”
  11. TBH = to be honest
    • Used to accompany a stated opinion
    • For example, “TBH, In-N-Out has better milkshakes than Whataburger.”
  12. WYD = what are you doing?
    • Used to ask what someone is doing
    • For example, “I’m chillin’ at the moment. WYD?”
  13. ATM = at the moment
    • Used to explain what is currently happening 
    • Variation: RN = right now
    • For example, “I’m chillin’ ATM. WYD?” “I’m working RN. I’ll call you later.”
  14. WBU = What about you?
    • Used to ask a question or restate something already brought up in the conversation
    • Variation: HBU = how ‘bout you?
    • For example, “What do you like to do in your free time?” “I love to read. WBU?”
  15. IDK = I don’t know
    • Used when you don’t know something
    • For example, “How long have you been waiting in line?” “IDK, but it feels like forever.”
  16. JK = just kidding
    • Used after a (sarcastic) joke or an exaggeration
    • For example, “The pie was out of this world! It was the absolute greatest dessert I’ve ever tasted. I ate the whole thing by myself. JK, but I did have a huge slice.”
  17. HMU = hit me up
    • Used as a request for someone to text or call again
    • For example, “I’m off on Monday. You should HMU then.”
  18. TGIF = thank God it’s Friday
    • Used on Friday to express gratitude for the upcoming weekend
    • For example, “I have been stressed this week, but I’m looking forward to the weekend. TGIF.”
  19. TBA / TBD = to be announced / to be decided / to be determined
    • Used as a placeholder when a certain detail is unavailable
    • For example, “Come to our house for dinner! Date: Saturday. Time: TBD.”
  20. AKA = also known as
    • Used to demonstrate alternative spellings or names
    • For example, “The United States of America, AKA the U.S.A.”
