How media is social(?)

Today’s quote/proverb: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link.

Origin: Thomas Reid’s Essays on the Intellectual Powers of Man (1786) included this line: “In every chain of reasoning, the evidence of the last conclusion can be no greater than that of the weakest link of the chain, whatever may be the strength of the rest.”

If you missed last week’s post, How social is media(?), you can read it here.

How media is social

Media is the summation of methods – including the extremely prevalent method known as social media – by which people can communicate with other people.

Being social is all about connecting with others. Online and through applications, people can connect with each other on many social media platforms. Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Snapchat, and BeReal are a few platforms on which I have created accounts and spent some time.

Media is social in that it provides means by which humans can interact.

But how media is social?

Socializing occurs in a multitude of ways outside the realm of social media. Believe it or not, people have communicated without social media for the majority of humanity’s existence.

The term “social” blankets a general topic involving billions of billions of intricate webs of communication systems consisting of countless subtle, underlying factors, unspoken messages, and unconscious – or subconscious – hints that are more active and alive than any one person on earth. The healthiest form of socializing is face to face.

In the life cycle of data, if one stage of the communication chain introduces false information, the end result is likely to be affected. Remember: A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. If modern society’s foundation continues to be gradually chipped away at by the intrusion of social media, I fear each link in the vast network of communication chains will only become weaker.

Riddle:

Do you know what can and cannot fit through the green glass door?

One possible solution: My feet can pass through the green glass door, but my shoes and socks cannot.
