The Storm Flees When You’re Having Fun

Amuse-bouche:

Eat fast. An oxymoron

Today’s Wonderful Words: “TEMPUS FUGIT.”

TEMPES FUGIT: The storm flees.

Maybe they were going for “TEMPUS FUGIT,” one letter off.

Close, but no cigar.

Maybe the engraver was distracted, having a good time. Maybe they lost track of time and spent too long on the other engravings, enjoying the work of their trade. When they came to the final block of stone, they were in a bit of a rush, looked down at their watch, noted the time, and thought to themselves, “Time flies when you’re having fun.”

TEMPUS FUGIT: Time flies.

This proverb serves as a reminder that seconds turn into minutes. Minutes turn into hours, which turn into days, which turn to weeks, and so on.

Here are some other wonderful words of wisdom etched in the sidewalk.

TE NOSCE: Know yourself.

I’m no expert on Latin. But the internet is. According to the world wide web, TE NOSCE is close to the classic Latin expression, “NOSCE TE IPSUM,” meaning “Know thyself.” This is not only an encouraging command, but it is also a challenging piece of advice. Look at yourself and understand who, what, and why you are.

AMOR VINCIT OMNIA: Love conquers all.

They got the spelling right on this one, no doubt. Love may conquer all, but what can be unconquered by hate? The answer to that question may be frightening. Don’t let hate destroy that which love builds.

AD LUCEM: To the light.

You may have heard the famous quote from Poltergeist. “Do NOT go into the light.” I’d argue that the opposite is better advice. AD LUCEM. Go to the light and see all you can see.

Ya know, on second thought, maybe the typo in the first image isn’t a typo at all. Maybe the message on the ground is a hopeful reminder that bad weather will pass. TEMPES FUGIT. Stormy weather won’t always be around. The storm flees when you’re having fun.

Answer to Saturday’s riddle:

3.

Explanation: Each closed area (or circle) within a written number has a value of 1. For example, 0, 6, and 9 each have a value of 1 while 8 has a value of 2.

1, 2, 3, 5, and 7 each have a value of 0. 2,876 has 3 closed areas: 2 from the 8 and 1 from the 6.
